Finally Setting Sail and Heading North.

10 March:

Finally we could set sails yesterday morning, even though the weather forecast was not ideal. We had a nice wind sailing along Grenada's west coast with little waves as the island protected us and only a small fetch for the waves to build. However the wind fluctuated constantly and we had to reef in and out most of the day. Once we cleared the north point of Grenada, the true wind went up to 28 kn and from the NNE and NE, with a large swell and some confused waves. As the wind was almost on the nose, we were hard pressed and close hauled all the way and had to tack several times.

By the time we were approaching Tyrell Bay, we started the Volvo to give us a bit help as to arrive into the Bay while it was still daylight. we arrived around 18:30 and found the Bay, as usual, full of yachts. But we found a good spot and as the Bay is well protected, we had a sun downer and after dinner (Mahi-Mahi served with a Mouton Cadet wine), went straight to bed.

Today we took it easy and by 10:00 we picked up the anchor and headed for Sandy Island, which is one of the Caribbean nicest island. We were the only yacht and we had the whole place for ourselves. This is the island where Stephane and Nicolas shot the video clip in 2004. It has a wonderful soft and white sand. But the lonely palm tree has disappeared and they have now planted a lot of new palm trees and bushes to try to keep the island together.

End afternoon we sailed across to Hillsborough here we stayed for two nights to do some shopping and clear out.

New Dawn at anchor at Hillsborugh.

Who said that Jesus had to be white?

After clearing out and shopping on the markets for fish (Mahi-Mahi, you guessed it right) and vegetables, we had a great sail, again close hauled, to Palm Island. This island is privately owned and a luxury resort created by a sailing couple, but now sold to a hotel group. It is absolutely fabulous with white beaches and bungalows spread out, as well as having boats and tennis courts.
